Chapter Twelve

Nessa stood frozen in her hallway for a good five minutes before she could move. Or even string rational thoughts together. Damn. That had been the most consuming kiss of her life. Ever. Not even in the heady early days with Stan, when anything he did felt sublime, had he ever kissed her like that. Kai’s lips were warm and demanding at the same time. She tingled, imagining what it would be like to give herself to him. And receive. Everything he had.

But consummating their chemistry wouldn’t be best in spite of how much she thought about it. And fantasized about it. That wouldn’t be good for either of them. But how on earth was she supposed to chase him out of her thoughts now? Impossible. The kiss only cemented him there as surely as if the Russian mafia had put concrete in his shoes.

She wandered to her sink. A glass of water. She needed it to quench the fire in her body that Kai had ignited. She downed the whole glass in one sitting, fully expecting steam to rise from her body.

“Wow.”

Nessa grabbed her phone, then dialed Patty’s number. This had to constitute an emergency. A feminine crisis.

“Vanessa?”

“I know you’re at work, but I needed to talk to someone,” she said and then paused. “I’m in a shit storm.”

Patty sighed. “I was afraid of that, and I’m pretty sure I know the brand of shit. Man shit. Kai just blew through here like his black hair was on fire.”

Kai Henderson had definitely kindled a fire. Flames licked at her soul at this very minute and then radiated outward to her hard nipples and her wet core. “Oh?”

“He just went into his boss’ office. He was in there a long time. Then, when he came out, he left. It’s unlike him to take time off,” Patty said. “Did something happen?”

“Can we meet for lunch?” Nessa asked. Not wanting to say what she needed to say over the phone. Patty’s facial expressions would make all the difference.

“I can be out of here in half an hour,” she said. “Let’s meet closer to your house so no one sees me. I’m deserving of a long lunch, but Kurt’s been crabby lately so I’d rather not push it.”

“Fair enough.”

Nessa worried the napkin at Patty’s choice of restaurant until the white paper laid in tattered shreds on the placemat. Patty walked in and slid into the seat opposite her. After taking one look at the pathetic attempt at origami, she scrunched up her face.

“What happened?” she asked as she reached across the table and covered Nessa’s clenched fist with her warm palm.

“We kissed.”

Patty nodded and exhaled a breath. Nessa didn’t even need to verify who she’d kissed. When her friend remained silent, she went on.

“I started it. I know that I shouldn’t have, but he had his face close to mine, and I couldn’t resist.”

“Oh, Nessa,” Patty said. “What did Kai do?”

“He kissed me back.”

Patty covered her mouth after she gasped. “No wonder he’s upset.
